What Men Can Learn From Romance Novels (or the answer to the question "What do women want?&quot

Part 6 Attraction – try not to get in your own way!

In Part 5 of this series, we saw that the heroes (and heroines) of romance novels either work out or work at something that keeps them fit. Whatever they do for a living, they look appropriate – whether they’re a corporate executive, a cowboy or a rock star.

I don’t see the day coming soon where the hero of a romance novel wears baggy shorts with his belly hanging over the top for a night out on the town, do you? And yet I saw exactly that look (several times) at a trendy restaurant on Friday night. I always wonder what kind of statement that guy is making – “I don’t care what I look like” or “I’m hoping you’ll like me in spite of this?”

If you want to stop getting in your own way, look around at work, at the gym and in a restaurant. Ask someone you trust if the clothes you see other men wear are something you could wear or, better yet, ask the trusted person to come shopping with you. Navy blue, black, tan and grey are the safest colors. You want to look good but blend in. If it doesn’t fit or you wore it in high school, donate it. Glasses – whatever newscasters are wearing is usually good and medium-size frameless is safe. Use deodorant and enough moisturizer so you don’t look and smell like a corpse. Bottom line: If you look like you care about yourself, it’s easier for her to care about you too! (Look for five more tips to come on this blog series.)
